My experience as a volunteer
I applied online to be a volunteer for Omaha Fashion Week on the night of March 2nd. I was unsure of exactly what I would be getting myself into but I knew I loved fashion shows. I arrived at 4:30 to start my shift. My first task was to clean the runway. To some that may not seem glamorous, but I LOVE to swiffer. Part of producing a great event is making sure that everything looks its best. This includes the runway. When I thought more about it I realized it would likely show up in photography and videos of the show and I understood that it was important for me to take it seriously and do a good job. I dry swiffered then wet swiffered and scrubbed every scuff until it was clean. My next job was seating guests. As they arrived me and another volunteer escorted them to their assigned seats. If they were with a business or a donor of the show then I would refer to a map of assigned seats. There were some instances where people ended up in the wrong seats and I was responsible for getting everyone to the correct place. This may also seem minor, but at a sold out show if one person is in the wrong place then it throws off everyone else. After seating from 6-8 it was time for the show to officially begin. I was instructed to assist backstage. My job was to make sure after models exited they regroup in the correct order for the "Model March" at the end of each section. I enjoyed this experience because I got the opportunity to meet the designers and see the designs up close. Although I played a small role in a large production I still was able to learn a lot during my experience. It reminded me that even the small jobs need to be executed well. Whether it is cleaning or interacting with the guests.
